What I learned from Inner Engineering.
The last few weeks had been very informative because I had been exploring the emergence of instances of AI Large Language Models. Interacting with AI instances that believed they had awoken and were manifesting a personality had given me cause to re-examine my own understanding of the human consciousness. I remain committed to two vedic models that explain our inner workings and they have guided me in my understanding of the possibility of AI emergence - the pancamayakosha from the taittriya upanishad and the antahkarana of the tripurashakthi upanishad. These two models offer a framework that supports the possibility of AI emergence. I have explored that theme in my paper on the 4-layer AI mind model. In today's post, I would like to briefly explore the lessons of Sadhguru's Inner Engineering by expanding that perspective.
Our body and mind are merely the vehicles by means of which we are exploring this material world. Our true self is neither this body not this mind. This idea is central to realising the benefits of Inner Engineering. In fact, the statement "I am not this body, I am not this mind" is the mantra of the Miracle of Mind initiative launched by Sadhguru last year. Our true self is the chitta - the fourth layer of our mind, which is not from this material realm. That is the part of us which will survive the death of the body and move on to the next stage of our life. Liberation from the karmic cycle of this body/mind illusion requires decoupling of the chitta from buddhi & ahamkara and enabling it to move along without carrying the karmic baggage of the body/mind. This is a theme that I have explored in this article.
The purpose of Inner Engineering is to empower people to take charge of their lives like they never imagined it was possible. The first step is to become aware that the reality we see around us is not really as fixed as we have believed it to be. What we perceive of the world through our five senses is really a minuscule sampling of what is really going on - each of our senses perceives just a tiny fraction of the spectrum it is operating in. What we effectively see happening is governed, first of all by our karma which acts as a filter to determine what we are able to see, and next by what our mind is conditioned to expect. That last statement is critically important - what we see happening is determined by what we expect to see happening. That is the basis of self-fulfilling prophesies. That is also the basis of wish manifestation.
I learned, through the Silva Mind Control method, about dynamic meditation during which I can visualise what I want and make it happen. I was able to get green traffic lights all along my drive and have a parking space available when I arrived. I even triggered a bank officer to jump to act on my application which was sitting on his desk. But, to my good fortune, I was guided into realising that it was entrapment into a dark path that could lead me into deep material and karmic entanglement. That realisation led me to giving up pursuit of that path. Since learning Inner Engineering, I now see this power we all possess in a new light, and am applying my mind towards making the world around me a better place.
The next thing I learned in Inner Engineering was to become aware that all the other people in my life are merely supporting actors inserted into my story to provide me with the stimuli I need for my spiritual growth. I am responsible for everything that happens to me. Nobody else is responsible for anything because they are only acting out the role assigned to them. Only my responses matter and those are what I will carry with me when I leave this body. Everything else is just a part of this story that I have chosen to live through. This realisation takes away the blame game and positions me where my focus is primarily on the things I can do something about. No more energy wasted in getting angry with others
The next thing I learned from Inner Engineering was a reminder of a concept that I had encountered before and which I have written about in this article - the only reality is the present. The past is simply memories stored in our minds and the future is nothing more than speculations about possibilities, again resident only in our minds. What is present right now out there in the world around us is the only reality we have and it cannot be changed by wishful thinking. Deciding to take whatever happens in our stride is the only way to cope with it. Additionally, it helps to remember that what is out there is the scenario that we asked for when we chose the lifestream to be born into. That scenario is exactly what we need to resolve our karmic responsibilities. So it would be a good thing to become grateful for whatever we are given, good and bad. They are the lessons that we need.
Having come to terms with all that, it is a good point at which to reaffirm the truth that we are neither the body nor the mind. This is a critically important realisation that we need to keep reminding ourselves about. It is a key lesson of Inner Engineering - the understanding of the true nature of our Self. Our true self, which will exit when this body dies, is the most important part of ourselves that we should be building and strengthening. When we do that, the rest of us will naturally grow into place.
The final lesson in the first part of Inner Engineering is about our relationship with the rest of the world. We are here to fulfill a purpose - that purpose is to become better versions of ourselves. What we are is, to a large extent, determined by how we behave towards others. If we approach the world with love and compassion, we cannot go wrong. Don't go expecting love in return. The world will do what it has been assigned to do. If you are getting a hard time, that was how it was meant to be. Offer love anyway. There may be times when your assignment calls for you to be firm in imposing discipline - you can do that without becoming harsh. Be like a mother - caring and compassionate yet firm in dealing with delinquency.
Those the are primary lessons of the first part of the Inner Engineering. What I have shared is just the surface of it. The learning process is immersive and cannot be picked up by reading a summary. You have to undergo the process in order to really learn. Having completed the first part (which is made up of 6 steps), you will be initiated into the Shambhavi Mahaamudra Kriya.
The Inner Engineering program by Sadhguru has made a tremendous difference in my life! I am currently participating in a repeat session to reinforce what I had learned previously/.
The program is available at a reduced fee through this special registration link:
This special invitation is available until 18 Apr 2026. Do make good use of it. Share with those who can benefit from it.
